Furnaces are one appliance every home needs, but this doesn’t mean buying a new one is any less of a mystery. If you’ve started looking at new furnaces for your home and you’re lost on where to start, these are four things you need to consider:
- System type—While you probably want to go with a central heating system, know that there are two main types: split systems and packaged systems. Split systems are comprised of a condensing unit, furnace, and coil that exist indoors. Comparatively, packaged systems contain heating and cooling components in one convenient, outdoor unit.
- Fuel source—Whether you want gas, oil, or electric should be one of the main guiding factors as you look at new furnaces. Carefully consider each fuel source based on your priorities, whether they are indoor air quality, efficiency, cost savings, etc.
- Zoning systems—Depending on your home’s construction, different areas may get warmer or cooler faster than others. Zoning systems solve this problem because each area is controlled by a different thermostat. Consider installing one of these systems along with your new furnace.
- Indoor air quality—Your furnace likely uses a blower to distribute heated air throughout your home. Inside your ducts, your furnace may also have systems that generate clean air before it’s released into your home’s interior. When you have your new furnace installed, make sure your contractor thoroughly cleans your vents to improve the indoor air quality in your home.
My husband and I moved into an older home, and we have been wanting to get a furnace. That is really great that we can get a packaged system with both heating and cooling components. That sounds like it would be a really great option for us. Thank you for the information!
Basically, as your article suggests, split type units are mostly installed and found indoors while the packaged systems are outdoors. That sounds interesting as I am actually in the pickle of choosing whether where I would like to have our furnace placed. I’ll try to see more of this and see whether the indoor or outdoor one is easier to have serviced. Thanks!
I thought it was good advice to ensure that the contractor cleans the vents before finishing the installation. Indoor air quality is an important factor in being comfortable in your home. My husband and I are looking to replace our furnace with an updated heating system and we want to make sure we are getting the best one possible.
I didn’t know you should consider the system type when buying a new heater. My heater stopped working last week. My family hates being cold and I think it is time to call in a contractor to replace or repair our heater.
Fantastic blog! Thanks for sharing very interesting post, I appreciate to blogger for amazing post.
We’ve been looking for a good new furnace for our home, and I think that some information would be helpful. I’m glad you talked about how you should look at the fuel source of a furnace, because I think that is a major impact on the system. I’m going to have to learn more about furnace installation and see what we can find!
My wife noticed that our heating was kind of weak during the winter, so we thought it would be smart to replace it now. I love that you say to make sure that you look at the fuel source you want, and look at each fuel option. I know that I would be curious to see which option our area has the most of.
Awesome tips! When buying a furnace, consider also asking opinion from a professional HVAC contractor as they know what kind of HVAC system fits your home. At the same time, they offer quality and cost-efficient HVAC services.
